FROM BUENOS AIRES TO MONTEVIDEO
By plane
There are approximately 10 direct flights a day all year round between Buenos Aires (Aeroparque Jorge Newbery) and Montevideo (Carrasco International Airport), the earliest at around 7 in the morning and the last around 9 at night. The flight lasts 40 minutes. Two companies fly between the two cities, Pluna (Uruguayan airline) and Aerolineas Argentinas.
By ferry
Buquebus runs a daily ferry service between Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The trip takes 2.5 to 3 hours and there are 3 to 4 services daily. The ferry arrives in the port of Montevideo. A tourist return costs approximately U$S 120. There are discounts for Uruguayans, children and elderly citizens. You can take your car across.
To find out about timetables and prices, see the Buquebus web site. Unfortunately the site is not easy to navigate, and the English section is poor (plus a lot of information is incomplete). If possible, use the Spanish section. It does however have a useful timetable section where you choose your preferred travel date and are then presented with all the ferries operating that day. You can also book your ticket directly online.
FROM BUENOS AIRES TO PUNTA DEL ESTE
By plane
There are approximately 6 to 12 flights a day between Buenos Aires (Aeroparque Jorge Newbery) and Punta del Este (Laguna del Sauce) during high season (between 15 December and 4 March). The rest of the year, there is one daily flight during the week, and 4 to 6 flights at weekends. The flight lasts 45 minutes. Two companies fly between the two cities, Pluna (Uruguayan airline) and Aerolineas Argentinas.
By ferry
Although there are no direct ferries to Punta del Este from Buenos Aires, even in high season, Buquebus has a special deal whereby you take the ferry to Montevideo and then a bus connection (approx. 2 hours) to Punta del Este. For more information on the ferry to Montevideo, see the section above.
FROM BUENOS AIRES TO COLONIA
By ferry
Buquebus runs a normal daily ferry service, lasting 3 hours, from Buenos Aires to Colonia as well as a fast jetfoil service which takes only 40 minutes. You can buy a special ticket from Buquebus which includes the passage to Colonia and a connecting bus to Montevideo (the bus trip takes about 2 hours). The normal ferry service plus bus to Montevideo costs approx. U$S 60 return and the jetfoil plus bus costs approx. U$S 100 return.
FROM BUENOS AIRES TO PIRIAPOLIS
By ferry
Buquebus runs a number of ferries and jetfoils between Buenos Aires and Piriapolis, but only in high season (mid-December to mid-March). The trip takes about 3 hours.
FROM MONTEVIDEO AIRPORT TO CENTER
Montevideo International Airport (Carrasco) is situated approximately 30 km from the center of Montevideo. To reach the center, you can choose from the following options:
By bus
The public bus departs approx. every 15 minutes in front of the airport. You must buy your ticket on board (14 Uruguayan pesos, about U$S 1). Please note that the bus only takes Uruguayan pesos, although you will be able to change money in the airport ("Bureau de Change" open all day, until approx. 10pm). The trip takes 55 minutes. The bus terminal is at the Rio Branco bus terminal in Montevideo.
There are also private bus companies, COT and COPSA, which stop by the airport on their way to the center, approximately one every half hour. This is a slightly faster option but costs a little more (approx. 30 pesos, about U$S 3). The ticket can be bought in advance at the COT and COPSA offices in the airport (where you can also check the timetable). The bus stops at the Tres Cruces bus terminal in Montevideo.
By taxi
If you decide to take a taxi, there is a taxi rank right outside the airport. A taxi to the center costs approximately U$S 30, although it is wise to arrange the price beforehand. You can pay in dollars as well as Uruguayan pesos. Although the taxi service is fairly efficient in Uruguay and you don't have the safety problems you have in, say, Buenos Aires, taxi drivers do drive quite fast, so be prepared!

The trip to Punta del Este is 140 km and takes approx. 2 hours and 15 minutes from the Tres Cruces terminal and 1 hour and 45 minutes from the airport. Passengers are dropped off at the Punta del Este bus terminal, which is at Avenida Gorlero and Calle 32, in the center of Punta del Este. There is a cafe in the terminal, public telephones and a taxi rank.
