| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The village of Rocha, founded in 1793 as "Nuestra señora de los remedios de Rocha", obtained the city category in 1894.
Today, Rocha has a bit more than 26.000 habitants and it´s the capital of the department. From this place located in the kilometer 210 of route 9, two routes start off, the 15th (to La Paloma) and 109th (to Maldonado).

The 70% of bird species from Uruguay can be found in far lands of Rocha, and 60% of all the animal species in Uruguay can be found here . You can find the largest black neck swans population in the planet, and the "palmares" (butiá trees) constitute the biggest group of "butiá capitata" palms in the world. There is also the biggest "ombúes" tree group on earth, in the well known "Monte de Ombúes" (Ombúes woods).
Its coasts may hide the biggest quantity of shipwrecks in the country.
